Don Bosco Centre for Social Action

History

Reaching out to the poor, especially the youth in need has been the priority of the Salesians of Don Bosco. The numerous institutions for the poor, community based interventions and programmes for the most marginalized and deprived prove so. One such community based intervention has been the Deodurga taluk programme initiated in 1996. Hyderabad - Karnataka region in the State of Karnataka is one of the most backward regions in South India. This region consists of the six districts of the state of Karnataka viz., Gulbarga, Yadagiri, Bidar, Bellary, Raichur and Koppal. These constitute the dioceses of Bellary and Gulbarga. The Bishop of Bellary had requested the Salesians to come to this region as early as 1982 and after a long drawn out study, Hospet was chosen as the point of intervention. It started functioning in 1989.

The Salesians were again asked by the Bishop of Bellary to take up the most northern regions specifically in Raichur and Gulbarga for initiating community based programmes. In 1996, Fr Emmanuel Ramapuram SDB and Fr C P Varghese SDB were sent to start the mission in Devadurga.

Fr Thomas Myladoor SDB, and Fr Jacob Malayattil SDB, then provincial and vice provincial respectively after visiting Devadurga paid a visit to Yadagiri in 1996. In a letter dated 27 August, 1996, the taluk of Yadagiri was entrusted to the Salesians for mission works by the bishop of Bellary.

The province constituted Devadurga as a registered parish with two substations viz., Bommanagimta and Savanthikal and Yadagiri as a quasi parish in 1999. Fr K J Jose SDB was appointed the pioneering parish priest of Devadurga-Yadagiri mission.

Initially Yadgiri mission started in1996 was taken care by Fr T J Sunny SDB, then in charge of Devadurga mission. Pastoral activities with celebration of the Holy Eucharist on regular intervals were given special focus. The residence cum chapel was inaugurated on 16 August 2002 by Fr Jose Kuttianimattathil SDB, then Provincial of Bangalore Province. In 2003 Don Bosco Yadagiri was made a separate presence with Fr T J Sunny SDB as its charge. The proposed idea of Don Bosco College of Education with B Ed and D Ed Departments, a school and separate hostels for boys and girls was approved in the provincial council on 26 October 2006. Meantime a project titled Skill Training and Rural Empowerment (STARE) was prepared for neighborhood involvement. In 2004 the primary section of the school was started. In December 2004 NCTE granted permission to start the D. Ed course.

In August 2005 Don Bosco Yadagiri became part of the newly established diocese of Gulbarga. October 2005 witnessed the approval of the project STARE. In November 2005 the NCTE approved the starting of B.Ed Course. In 2008 October Fr.
